The Lyons Township High School girls soccer team captured the Class 3A LT Regional championship on Tuesday, edging Downers Grove North 2-0 in overtime to claim their thirteenth consecutive regional title. The victory extended the Lions' unbeaten streak to nine games since a loss to Naperville Central on April 24, and sets up a sectional showdown against either Oak Park and River Forest, Hinsdale Central or St. Laurence.
Key Performers Shine
Senior forward Zibby Michaelson, who returned from a year‑long hiatus to focus on club play and college recruiting, opened the scoring with her team‑high 16th goal of the season. Sophomore Lauren Salvino provided the decisive assist before adding the winning goal in overtime, sealing the triumph with composure under pressure.
Coach Bill Lanspeary praised the squad's resilience, noting that the win was especially impressive given the strength of the competition they faced throughout the regional tournament.
The Lions have not only secured a historic streak of regional titles but also celebrated their first West Suburban Conference Silver Division championship since 2023, underscoring the program's consistent growth and depth.
Looking Ahead
With the sectional title within reach, the team is aiming to capture its first sectional championship since 2024, a milestone that would cap a remarkable turnaround after early‑season setbacks. The upcoming match against Oak Park and River Forest will determine which side advances to the final, where a victory could herald a new era of success for the Lyons Township program.
