The Mid-American Conference released an official statement on Thursday after uncovering a critical replay protocol error that altered the outcome of the Western Michigan versus Michigan football contest.
During the game, the Big Ten’s replay crew mistakenly relied on its internal timing system rather than the program feed clock, a breach of the established procedure that governs instant replay reviews.
Because of the misapplied clock, an additional play was awarded to Michigan, pushing the final tally to 12-7 in favor of the Wolverines; had the correct protocol been followed, the score would have remained 12-7 in favor of Western Michigan, making the Broncos the rightful victors.
MAC’s Appeal to National Governing Bodies
The MAC has formally appealed to both the NCAA FBS Oversight Committee and the College Football Playoff selection board, urging them to retroactively recognize Western Michigan as the game’s winner in order to preserve fairness and maintain the integrity of conference standings.
If the appeal succeeds, the correction could affect not only the conference’s win-loss record but also the broader landscape of playoff eligibility and ranking considerations, underscoring the high stakes of precise officiating in high-profile college football matchups.
