Maccabi Ramat Gan, a storied basketball club in Israel, has taken an unprecedented step by merging its men’s and women’s teams into a single entity, marking the first such unification in the country's sporting history.
Founded in 1957, the women’s program has built a distinguished record, capturing two national championships and adding six runner‑up finishes, including recent victories in the Winner Cup and State Cup.
A new era for basketball in Ramat Gan
The merger, announced by Avi Gabbay, who acquired the club in April 2024, is framed as a move to create a club that represents an entire city, establishing uniform professional and managerial standards for both squads competing in the top leagues.
Ora Glazer, who has served as CEO since 2010, welcomed the change, highlighting the social and marketing advantages that will promote women’s empowerment and broaden the club’s appeal.
Ramat Gan Mayor Carmel Shama‑Hacohen praised the initiative, stating that the city’s support for local athletics will be amplified through a unified sporting family home that bridges generations and genders.
Plans for a new arena are underway, intended to honor the legacy of both teams and to serve as a modern hub for community events, further cementing the club’s role as a cultural and commercial catalyst.
