World Hockey Championship Set for Switzerland
The International Ice Hockey Federation will host its annual world championship in Switzerland, gathering 16 nations across two groups. The tournament, traditionally a showcase of elite talent, draws massive attention from fans and analysts alike.
Canada enters the competition with a young but experienced lineup, naming 19‑year‑old Macklin Celebrini as its youngest‑ever captain. The San Jose Sharks forward will lead a roster that also features Sidney Crosby, a veteran of four previous tournaments.
Celebrini’s second NHL season was nothing short of historic. He posted 115 points, establishing a new franchise record for the Sharks and earning a spot among the three finalists for the Ted Lindsay Award alongside Connor McDavid and Nikita Kucherov.
The young captain joins a storied group that includes legends such as Wayne Gretzky, John Tavares, Ryan O’Reilly, Nathan MacKinnon, Tage Thompson and Matthew Tkachuk. Their combined experience adds depth to a team that aims to extend Canada’s record 28 championship titles.
The United States, fresh from a 2025 victory that ended a 92‑year title drought, will be led by captain Justin Faulk. Matthew Tkachuk, who is poised to become the first American to complete hockey’s Triple Gold Club, headlines a squad that also includes Nico Hirschier, Timo Meier, Nino Niederreiter, Pius Sutter, Roman Josi, Lucas Raymond and Aleksandar Barkov.
Other traditional powerhouses such as Switzerland, Sweden and Finland are expected to contend for medals, while teams from Germany, Latvia, Austria, Hungary, Britain, Czechia, Denmark, Slovakia, Norway and Slovenia round out the field. The top four from each group will advance to the quarterfinals, with the final and bronze‑medal games slated for May 31.
Looking Ahead
With a blend of emerging stars and seasoned veterans, the upcoming championship promises high‑stakes competition and unforgettable moments. Fans worldwide will watch closely as Macklin Celebrini’s leadership and the U.S. defense of its title shape the narrative of the tournament.
