A Summer of Triumph for Souderton’s Rising Star
Maddie Nenstiel, a sophomore at Souderton High School, traveled across the Atlantic to compete in the Euro Youth Basketball Cup in Spain, where her team captured a silver medal in the 16U bracket. The road to the tournament began after a standout performance in the AAU circuit, a journey that was nearly aborted by a serious knee injury that threatened to keep her off the court.
Despite the setback, Nenstiel’s determination paid off as she earned a spot on the PhD Hoops USA roster. The squad, assembled through intensive practices and off‑court bonding activities, forged a chemistry that proved vital when facing the noisy European crowds and the pressure of a final showdown against France.
In the championship game, a sudden injury to a key opponent forced the referees to employ a running clock, adding an extra layer of tension. Nenstiel’s contributions of 14 points, 4.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 2.5 steals per game helped steer her team to the runner‑up position, a result that also secured her the tournament’s Most Valuable Player award.
Her performance did not go unnoticed; she joined two other PhD Hoops teammates who were also recognized as MVPs in their respective age groups, underscoring the program’s growing influence on the international stage.
Looking Toward the Paris World Games
Building on the momentum of her European experience, Nenstiel plans to represent PhD Hoops USA at the upcoming Paris World Games next summer. The prospect of competing in France again excites her, and she hopes to translate the lessons learned in Spain into further growth both on and off the court.
