The small Ohio community of Madeira is spearheading a $500,000 effort to transform the baseball diamond at Sellman Park, a venue that has long served as the home of the local Mustangs and a gathering point for generations of players.
A field in need of a makeover
Although the park’s infield already received new turf a couple of years ago, players such as Evan Cissell have felt the difference on the diamond, and parents like Dave Hyland argue that further modernization is essential to keep the program competitive and safe for future athletes.
The initiative, nicknamed the "Madeira Field of Dreams" project, aims to add new dugouts, upgraded fencing and other amenities that will benefit current athletes and future generations who will inherit the field.
Community momentum
A significant boost came when former Madeira graduate Andrew Benintendi, now an outfielder with the Chicago White Sox, contributed a substantial donation that has pushed the fundraising campaign close to its halfway mark, energizing local supporters and donors.
Local organizers say the improvements will do more than polish the playing surface; they will reinforce a sense of pride and provide a stable venue for youth leagues, school teams and recreational players across the region, ensuring the field remains a cornerstone of community life.
With the campaign already halfway to its goal, organizers are confident that a mix of private contributions, community events and grant opportunities will secure the remaining funds, positioning the upgraded field to be ready for the next season and beyond.
