A New Frontier for Girls’ Sports
Seventy‑five young athletes from Madison’s four MMSD Afterschool High School sites and Verona High School concluded their first season of flag football, marking a milestone for girls’ participation in the sport.
The league, conceived by the Madison School & Community Recreation program and financed by the Green Bay Packers, was sparked by Adam Smith, a physical‑education teacher at Toki Middle School, who saw an untapped opportunity to introduce football to girls.
Mary Roth, executive director of MSCR, highlighted the Packers’ contribution as the catalyst that turned a classroom idea into a community reality, underscoring the partnership’s role in providing equipment, coaching and visibility.
Beyond the current season, the initiative aims to expand participation and ultimately secure official WIAA sanctioning, a move that could formalize girls’ flag football as a varsity sport across Wisconsin.
Looking Ahead
With strong community backing and a clear pathway for growth, organizers are already planning to add more teams and schools for the next season, hoping to build on the momentum generated by this inaugural effort.
