Maggie Volmer, a junior at Holy Names, has emerged as one of the most closely watched prospects in New York high school basketball, anchoring a team that reached the Section 2 Class A final.
Choosing Mercy
After a rigorous recruitment process, Volmer announced her commitment to Mercy University, a Division II program competing in the East Coast Conference. She emphasized the university’s welcoming campus environment and the strong relationship she developed with head coach Scott Lagas as the primary factors in her decision.
Volmer declined several other Division II offers, including scholarships from Southern New Hampshire University, Franklin Pierce University, Daemen University, and Queens University of Charlotte. The choice also aligned with her academic ambitions, as she plans to major in business at Mercy.
Milestones and Playoff Impact
During the recent Section 2 Class A tournament, Volmer reached the 1,000‑point career milestone against Lansingburgh in February. In the semifinals she recorded 17 points, 13 rebounds and a career‑high 10 blocked shots, guiding Holy Names to a victory over Glens Falls. Her performances earned her Class A all‑tournament honors despite the team’s loss to Albany Academy in the title game.
A Team Poised for a Title
Alongside teammates Julia Viglucci and Jeniyah Wood, Volmer will be central to Holy Names’ pursuit of a sectional championship this winter. Their chemistry, combined with the leadership of senior guard Ashlyn Wiggins and the veteran presence of Scott Lagas, positions the squad as a formidable contender.
Off the court, Volmer balances athletics with academics, intending to pursue a business degree while remaining focused on leading her team back to the championship game. Her ambition underscores a broader narrative of growth, resilience, and community representation.
