A New Era for Mahar Regional Football
The varsity program, known as the Senators, finished the previous campaign with a 2‑9 record, dropping games to crosstown rival Athol while picking up wins over McCann Tech and Quaboag Regional. The team now fields 30 players eager to lay a fresh foundation.
First‑year head coach Kyle Newton has arrived with a clear vision: to push every athlete beyond their comfort zone, sharpening both mental acuity and physical endurance. His new playbook features a Wing‑T formation that places Freeland Ringer at the heart of the offense.
Ringer, who has taken on a more grounded role, is expected to drive a higher volume of plays and mentor younger teammates. Alongside him, Heyrlackmung Calypso brings a rare blend of speed and power, operating as both a running back and middle linebacker.
To support this tactical shift, the squad has adopted a custom mobile application that logs workouts, monitors daily quizzes and reinforces learning during each practice session. The tool is designed to keep players accountable and engaged throughout the grind.
The Senators open their preseason on September 12 at the Woodward Complex against Smith Vocational, a matchup that will test the new schemes on the field. Newton says the early games will be a litmus test for the culture he hopes to cement.
Beyond X’s and O’s, the team is focused on a broader cultural transformation. By emphasizing ball control and limiting reliance on the passing game, they aim to dictate tempo and build confidence as the season progresses.
