A New Chapter for the Black Bears
The University of Maine’s football program has kicked off its preseason training camp, marking the first step toward a season that could reshape its recent standing in the Colonial Athletic Association.
In the latest CAA coaches’ poll, the Black Bears were slotted seventh among 13 contenders, a position that reflects both respect for the program’s progress and the challenge that lies ahead.
Head coach Jordan Stevens, now in his third year, has repeatedly stressed that the foundation of his squad rests on the strength of its offensive and defensive lines. “We built this team around the trenches,” Stevens said during a recent camp session.
The roster features several preseason all‑conference selections, including linemen Anthony Iliano, Andrew Kocan and Chris Bacon, whose experience should provide immediate stability on both sides of the ball.
Redshirt junior running back Nick Laughlin is among those eyeing a breakthrough, stating his goal is to help the Black Bears capture the CAA Championship and reclaim the Brice‑Cowell Musket from rivals New Hampshire.
Noah Carpenter, a redshirt sophomore linebacker, echoed the underdog mindset, noting that the team embraces the perception of being overlooked while aiming to surprise opponents.
Rashawn Marshall, another redshirt sophomore running back, added that the squad’s competitiveness and drive to dominate will be evident from the first snap.
Cornerback Jamaree Gibson also earned preseason all‑conference honors, underscoring the defensive talent that could anchor the secondary.
The season officially opens on August 27 with a home matchup against Towson, a game that will serve as the first test of the Black Bears’ preparations.
Chasing the Musket
Beyond the rankings, the Black Bears are motivated by the historic Brice‑Cowell Musket, a trophy that symbolizes dominance over New Hampshire. Reclaiming it is framed as a tangible milestone in their championship pursuit.
