The University of Maine women's soccer team opened its 2026 campaign in convincing fashion, defeating Mercer 3-1 at the New Balance Soccer Complex in Orono, Maine. The match marked the Black Bears' first meeting with the Bears from Mercer and set a positive tone for the season.
A Promising Start
Isabella Meadows broke the deadlock just 65 seconds into the contest, heading home a cross from Sandrine Brault to give Maine an early 1-0 lead. The quick strike energized the home crowd and put immediate pressure on Mercer.
Luise Reinwald then added a brace to cement the victory. Her first goal came in the 25th minute, a well‑timed header from Britta Denny's corner kick, followed by a powerful strike from 20 yards out in the 68th minute that sealed the 3-1 result.
Between the goals, Elena Barenberg made five saves to keep Mercer at bay, while Ashley Kraemer's collegiate debut added another storyline, marking the third sibling from her family to wear a Maine jersey.
The Black Bears outshot Mercer 16‑11, matched them 6‑6 on shots on goal and tied 4‑4 on corner kicks, a balance that bodes well for the schedule ahead. Upcoming games include a noon clash with Sacred Heart on August 23, followed by a Thursday meeting with Merrimack on August 27.
