Maine’s Pine Tree Baseball League: A Century-Old Amateur Tradition

From 1925 to 18 teams, the league unites players of all ages around a shared love of the game

For more than a century, the Pine Tree Baseball League has been more than a summer pastime; it is a living archive of Maine's baseball heritage. Founded in 1925, the league now fields 18 teams that span the state, from the western town of Bethel to the coastal city of Bath and up to Bangor and beyond.

A Century-Old Tradition

Its players range from teenagers just out of high school to men in their fifties, many of whom once wore college or high school uniforms. Matt McCarthy, a 39-year-old who left college because of lingering knee injuries from a high school basketball accident, found a new home on the field. Likewise, Jake Bessey, 32, began at 18 and has since managed the Turner Marlins while still playing for multiple clubs within the league.

Tyler Rose, the league’s president since 2024, embodies the blend of administration and competition. He coordinates schedules, updates statistics, and still laces up his cleats for the Kennebec Sturgeons, illustrating how the role of president is as much about personal participation as it is about governance.

From Eight to Eighteen

What began as a modest eight-team competition has expanded dramatically over the decades. Today's 18-team roster reflects a growth that mirrors the league’s deepening roots across Maine's diverse towns, each adding its own flavor to the collective baseball narrative.

The geographic spread, stretching from the western border near Bethel to the eastern shoreline of Bath, ensures that the league remains a truly statewide institution. This reach not only broadens participation but also reinforces the sense that baseball is a unifying thread across the state's varied communities.

Playoffs are set to begin this weekend, promising a weekend of spirited contests where the focus remains on enjoyment rather than trophies. The tournament underscores the league’s enduring appeal: a community where baseball is a shared passion, not a career ladder.
