A Scholarship Bridging Community Values and University Aspirations
Makayla Hatcher, a recent graduate of Westfield High School, has been awarded the inaugural Westfield-to-IU Kokomo Pathway Scholarship, a program that blends financial assistance with pathways into nursing and basketball.
The scholarship is designed for students who embody the core values of Westfield Washington Schools — honesty, compassion, respect, responsibility and hard work — and it aims to reinforce the district’s culture of growth while supporting IU Kokomo’s mission of personalized learning.
Hatcher selected Indiana University Kokomo for its reputation in the health sciences and the opportunity to continue her basketball career, citing the institution’s high‑quality nursing program as a key factor.
Within the university, she will join the School of Nursing and Allied Health Professions, where smaller class sizes and a supportive environment align with her academic goals.
Recipients must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA and enroll in designated academic pathways to remain eligible for the award, ensuring that scholarship holders stay on a trajectory of academic and athletic excellence.
University officials say the initiative exemplifies how community‑driven principles can be translated into concrete opportunities, forging a stronger link between Westfield’s educational culture and IU Kokomo’s commitment to individualized student success.
