Malawi’s women’s national football team, known as the Scorchers, has etched its name into history by securing a place at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, a milestone that has long eluded the nation.
The achievement came in dramatic fashion during the quarterfinal of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, where a 2‑1 comeback victory over Ghana turned a deficit into a triumph.
A Comeback for the Ages
Ghana drew first blood in the seventh minute when forward Chantelle Boye‑Hlorkah opened the scoring, only for Temwa Chawinga to level the match with a well‑placed strike after a deflected effort from the edge of the box.
The turning point arrived after the break when a VAR review denied Ghana a second goal, shifting momentum in Malawi’s favour.
In the 79th minute, Rose Kadzere met a perfectly timed pass from Chawinga to slot the winning goal, sealing a result that will be remembered for years.

Temwa Chawinga, a two‑time NWSL MVP who now plays for the Kansas City Current, was quick to praise the squad’s resilience, while her sister Tabitha Chawinga also contributed two goals earlier in the tournament.
The Scorchers have already dispatched higher‑ranked opponents such as Egypt, Ghana and Nigeria, having entered the competition as the 153rd‑ranked team in the world.
