A strategic addition
Michael Malone, the newly appointed head coach of the University of North Carolina’s men’s basketball program, is busy assembling a coaching staff that could shape the Tar Heels’ fortunes for years to come.
Among the latest additions is Bryan Tibaldi, a seasoned assistant coach whose career spans the NBA, collegiate powerhouses, and international scouting circuits. Tibaldi most recently served as an assistant with the Cleveland Cavaliers before returning to the college ranks.
His journey began at Michigan State, where he walked on, later became a graduate assistant under Tom Izzo, and was part of the 2009 national championship run that culminated in a showdown against UNC. He then spent six seasons with the Cavaliers, honing his expertise in practice planning, individual skill development, and film analysis.
Prior to the Cavaliers, Tibaldi refined his craft at Providence under Kim English, contributing to the Friars’ strategic development. His early professional steps included video and basketball operations roles with the Chicago Bulls, experiences that have equipped him with a comprehensive understanding of modern basketball analytics.
Tibaldi will join a staff that already includes Chuck Martin, Pat Sullivan, and Sean May, though the university has yet to release the complete roster of assistants. The move signals Malone’s intent to blend NBA‑level insight with deep collegiate roots.
The appointment underscores a broader trend of NBA veterans transitioning into college coaching, bringing professional rigor to the Tar Heels’ program as they aim to reclaim national prominence.
