A New Era for the Tar Heels
Michael Malone, the former NBA coach, was announced as the new head coach of the University of North Carolina’s men’s basketball program, signing a six‑year, $50 million contract that guarantees him $7.5 million in the opening season.
His newly assembled staff will command a combined payroll of more than $1.7 million, with assistant coach Chuck Martin set to earn $500,000, Pat Sullivan $390,143, Bryan Tibaldi $365,000, Sean May $344,659 and Brandon Robinson $125,000 for the current year.
Speaking at the press conference, Malone emphasized his respect for the Tar Heels’ storied legacy while signaling that he intends to introduce fresh strategies and a distinct philosophy for the program.
UNC’s general manager Jim Tanner will receive $950,000 this year, and the university also announced that Davis’s former assistants Jeff Lebo and Brad Frederick will not be retained under Malone’s regime.
