Malone University names Jake Shoup women’s basketball head coach

Former Norwayne coach brings state‑tournament success and a faith‑centered vision to the program

Malone University announced this week that Jake Shoup, a 2020 graduate and former standout coach at Norwayne High School, has been appointed head coach of the women's basketball team.

A new era for women's basketball

Shoup arrives after a six‑year tenure in which he guided the Raiders to back‑to‑back appearances at the state tournament and compiled a 64‑17 record, earning both the 2026 Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Association State Coach of the Year honor and the Wayne County Athletic League Coach of the Year award.

The position became available when Selana Ickes stepped down to accept an NCAA Division I assistant coaching role at Eastern Michigan University.

Athletic director Tanya Hockman praised Shoup’s character, his commitment to faith‑based athletics, and his proven ability to develop competitive teams, stating that his leadership aligns perfectly with Malone’s mission.

Shoup expressed his honor and gratitude for the opportunity, saying he looks forward to building on the program’s tradition while mentoring student‑athletes both on and off the court.

The university community anticipates that Shoup’s blend of tactical acumen and spiritual perspective will elevate the team’s performance and reinforce Malone’s reputation as a leader in collegiate athletics.
