A 31‑year‑old man was taken into custody at Lake Shore Middle School in Jacksonville on August 10, 2024 after school police discovered a knife and a baseball bat in his possession. The arrest occurred on school grounds during the morning hours, when the campus was still in session.
The suspect, later identified as Christopher Coppock, was found wearing a red hoodie, red shorts and a black backpack, and was described as appearing angry when approached by officers. He had no scheduled classes or official business at the school.
Duval County School Police charged him with one count of possession of a weapon on school property, a third‑degree felony, and one count of trespassing, a second‑degree misdemeanor. The knife, a red fixed‑blade kitchen knife measuring more than five inches, had been wrapped in a towel inside his backpack.
School’s Safety Protocols Remain in Focus
Investigators determined that Coppock had no interaction with students and had not entered any restricted areas. He claimed he was on campus merely to look around and read signs, but school officials deemed the presence unauthorized and a potential threat to safety.
Following the incident, the school’s principal notified families about the security breach, emphasizing the effectiveness of locked doors and controlled access points that are part of the district’s ongoing effort to prevent unauthorized entry. The suspect was formally barred from all Duval County schools.
The episode underscores the continued vigilance required in school environments, where even seemingly minor infractions can trigger serious legal consequences. Authorities praised the quick response of campus police and the cooperation of school staff in maintaining a safe learning environment.
