A 60‑year‑old man has been charged with first‑degree murder after a fatal stabbing that shocked the North Carolina basketball community.
The victim, Sheremy Gwenette Dillard, was a respected coach of girls’ basketball and a teacher at a local school. She was found dead from multiple stab wounds at her Raleigh home on August 13, 2024.
A suspect on the run
Rickey Andra Harper, the victim’s boyfriend, had been living with her at 2201 Whistling Straits Way in Raleigh. After the killing, he fled northward, prompting a coordinated search across state lines.
Plymouth Township police traced Harper’s vehicle to a Courtyard Marriott hotel and later to a nearby mall, where he was located and apprehended after a brief resistance.
He was taken to the Montgomery County Correctional Facility, where he now awaits an extradition hearing that will bring him back to North Carolina for trial.
The case has drawn attention from local officials and community members, who are mourning Dillard’s loss and urging swift justice.
