A 60‑year‑old man, Rickey Andra Harper, has been charged with first‑degree murder after a brutal stabbing that claimed the life of 57‑year‑old basketball coach Sheremy Gwenette Dillard in Wake County.
Dillard’s body was discovered inside her Raleigh home around noon on Thursday, bearing multiple stab wounds that investigators say point to a violent assault.
According to authorities, Dillard and Harper had been in a relationship and shared a residence, a detail that has emerged as detectives piece together the motive behind the attack.
Harper was not present at the scene of the killing, and after the discovery of the body, law enforcement turned to surveillance footage and other leads to locate him.
A tip from Plymouth Township Police led officers to a white Chevrolet Astro van parked at the Plymouth Meeting Mall, where Harper’s presence was captured on video.
When officers approached, Harper confronted them, keeping his right hand in his pocket and refusing to surrender, even as he shouted at detectives to shoot him.
The standoff ended with Harper fleeing back to his van before he was finally taken into custody and transported to the Montgomery County Correctional Facility, where he is being held without bond pending extradition.
