Homicide Probe Underway
Early Thursday morning, emergency responders were dispatched to the Smoke Depot shop at 116 San Pedro SE, just off Central Avenue, after reports of a violent assault. The scene, located in Southeast Albuquerque, quickly became the focus of a homicide investigation.
According to police, the victim — identified as 46‑year‑old Dwayne Burwell — suffered life‑threatening head injuries after being struck with a baseball bat. Witnesses described a chaotic scene, and first‑responders administered emergency care before transporting him to a nearby hospital.
Burwell’s death was confirmed later that morning, and investigators have classified the case as a homicide. The Albuquerque Police Department has opened a formal inquiry, canvassing the area for evidence and interviewing potential witnesses.
Gilbert Gallegos, a department spokesperson, emphasized that while the investigation is still in its early stages, authorities are treating the incident with the seriousness it warrants. “We are working diligently to piece together the events that led to this tragedy,” Gallegos said.
The community has expressed shock and concern over the violence, with local leaders urging anyone with information to come forward. Police have asked residents to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activity, especially in areas near late‑night businesses.
