The Herald-Tribune's annual Big 15 ranking has become a touchstone for the most coveted high school football prospects in Manatee and Sarasota counties, drawing attention from recruiters, coaches and fans alike.
The Big 15 Spotlight
Among the standouts is Nolan Downes, a quarterback who made a seamless transition from IMG Academy to Manatee High School and helped the program to an 8‑4 finish in his debut season. His blend of consistency and athleticism has attracted interest from North Carolina, Iowa, Cincinnati and Tulane, while his personal goal remains a state championship.
Another key figure is Tavares Powell, a versatile wide receiver whose 488 receiving yards and nine touchdowns at Southeast High School underscored his playmaking ability. Powell, who has committed to the Kansas Jayhawks, describes his game as a blend of offensive and defensive skill sets, emphasizing his readiness to contribute in multiple roles.
Sarasota’s own Hudson West brings a strong arm and sharp football IQ to the conversation. He completed 55.1 percent of his passes for 2,836 yards, 26 touchdowns and five interceptions last season, earning offers from Florida, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech, Louisville and Iowa State. Off the field, West says his priority is building relationships with coaches and finding a program that can nurture his development.
Looking Ahead
As the new season approaches, the three prospects share a common thread: a hunger to translate high school success into collegiate impact. Whether chasing a state title with Manatee or carving out a role at a Power Five program, each player is focused on leveraging the upcoming campaign to cement their trajectories.
