Manatee County commissioners are poised to review a $80 million proposal that would transform a 22‑acre parcel in Lakewood Ranch into an indoor sports and entertainment hub dubbed Project Grace.
The development would feature four ice rinks, multiple volleyball courts, event spaces, food service outlets and retail areas, positioning the venue as a regional tournament destination.
Local families have voiced enthusiasm, arguing that the facility would give children like those of coach Tom Barilla easier access to youth hockey and other sports without the long drive to the Ellenton Ice and Sports Complex.
Barilla, a Lakewood Ranch resident and youth hockey coach, says the rink would not only expand playing time but also teach grit and life skills that extend beyond the ice.
Nearby resident Rosella Stromberg, however, has voiced apprehension about the potential surge in traffic, noise and safety concerns for the surrounding neighborhood.
Community response and next steps
Stromberg has organized a Facebook group and launched a petition, intending to present her objections to the Manatee County Commission at the upcoming August or September meeting. If the commission approves a land lease agreement in the coming months, site‑plan approval could follow in the fall, paving the way for a January groundbreaking and a summer 2028 completion.
