Mansfield Senior High School’s basketball coach Marquis Sykes is set to bring the city’s outdoor courts back to life with a community‑focused tournament this summer.
Tyger Park Takeover: A Day of Play Across Five Parks
The one‑day event, scheduled for July 18, will wind through Maple Park, King Street Park, Johns Park, John Todd Park and Prospect Park, offering boys and girls entering grades three through twelve a chance to compete and learn.
Sykes, a former All‑Ohio standout who once tallied 1,151 career points at Senior High, hopes the tournament will recapture the gritty, fundamentals‑first style of outdoor basketball that shaped his own development.
Current members of the boys’ and girls’ basketball staffs, along with senior players, will run drills and games at each stop, turning each park into a mini‑clinic that blends competition with skill building.
Community Engagement and Future Impact
Beyond the games, Sykes emphasizes keeping families connected to the school’s programs, saying the takeover is as much about fostering local pride as it is about preparing the next generation of Tygers.
The free, open‑to‑all format reflects a broader mission to revitalize neighborhood courts and give youngsters a tangible pathway into the school’s basketball culture.
