A season of unmet expectations
Despite the early success, the team slipped to 78 points this season, finishing last in the Atlantic Division and missing the playoffs, a downturn that prompted the organization to seek a fresh direction.
General Manager John Chayka characterized the move as an organizational shift rather than a direct indictment of Berube’s coaching, emphasizing a desire to realign the team’s strategy and culture.
Roster adjustments amid injury woes
The Leafs also contended with a series of injuries, most notably a season‑ending knee injury to three‑time Maurice (Rocket) Richard Trophy winner Auston Matthews, which further strained the lineup.
In an effort to fill the void left by winger Mitch Marner, the club added forwards Matias Maccelli, Dakota Joshua and Nicolas Roy, hoping their experience would stabilize both offensive and defensive zones.
Berube’s coaching philosophy, known for its straightforward and no‑nonsense approach, had been embraced after previous coach Sheldon Keefe struggled to find consistency, but the results could not meet the club’s expectations.
Draft lottery brings fresh hope
The Maple Leafs will now turn their attention to the NHL draft, having secured the first overall pick after winning the league’s draft lottery, positioning them to select either forward Gavin McKenna or defenseman Ivar Stenberg.
