A Freshman Sensation
Maria Schuller arrived in Little Rock with a mix of hope and doubt. After graduating from high school she questioned whether she should continue her soccer career, but the University of Arkansas‑Little Rock took a chance on her, offering a walk‑on spot that would soon become the foundation of a remarkable rise.
During her freshman year in 2024 she played in 17 matches and quickly earned recognition as OVC Player of the Week three times throughout 2025. Her persistence paid off as she transitioned from a peripheral role to a central figure in the team’s attack.
A Season to Remember
The 2025 season marked a turning point. Schuller led the Ohio Valley Conference in both goals (12) and points (28), a performance that secured her the Offensive Player of the Year award and placed her on the All‑OVC first team. Her contributions also earned her a spot on the third‑team All‑NCAA South Region and, notably, the prestigious Hermann Trophy watch list — the first UALR player ever to receive that preseason honor.
Beyond individual accolades, the team posted a 7‑4‑6 overall record, going unbeaten at home (4‑0‑4) and outscoring opponents 23‑9 during a stretch that began with a 5‑0 loss to Oral Roberts in September 2024. The program’s rapid improvement set the stage for its upcoming move to the United Athletic Conference.
Looking Ahead to the UAC Debut
The Trojans will open their UAC schedule on September 24 against Abilene Christian before traveling to face the University of Arkansas in a nonconference clash that pits them against Power‑4 talent at the Coleman Sports Complex. These matchups offer a rare platform for UALR to test itself against higher‑profile opponents and further cement its rising reputation.
For Schuller, the journey is about more than personal milestones. Her loyalty to UALR reflects a deeper commitment to the program that believed in her when she was unsure of her path.
