Mark Connolly has stepped into a new role as director of football at Derry City, ending his playing career to take on the responsibilities of shaping the club’s future.
The 34‑year‑old defender spent two seasons with Derry after arriving in 2022, contributing to the side that captured the FAI Cup and establishing himself as a fan favourite.
A new chapter at the Brandywell
Connolly’s journey to the Brandywell began in England, where he featured for Bolton Wanderers, Crawley Town and Kilmarnock, before a stint at Dundee United in Scotland.
His experience across three countries gave him a broad perspective that he now hopes to bring to the Irish Premiership outfit.
Speaking about his appointment, Connolly said he is excited to return to the club in a capacity that allows him to influence player development, staff welfare and the academy setup.
Manager Tiernan Lynch welcomed the appointment, highlighting Connolly’s professionalism and the positive influence he will have on the squad.
Ruaidhri Higgins, Connolly’s former boss, added that the former defender’s dedication and tactical acumen have left a lasting imprint on the team.
Derry City currently sit sixth in the League of Ireland Premier Division, a position that reflects a competitive season as they prepare to host Bohemians on Friday.
The upcoming fixture will be streamed on BBC platforms, giving supporters another chance to follow the club’s progress.
