A Legendary Career
Mark Heiderscheid, the longtime soccer coach at Edwardsville High School, announced his retirement after completing his 26th season, bringing to a close a career that produced 401 victories, 14 Southwestern Conference titles and a 2000 state championship.
His final campaign ended with a narrow loss to rival Collinsville in the Class 3A playoffs, but Heiderscheid remained steadfast in his focus on the players, choosing to highlight their achievements rather than his own.
Hall of Fame Induction
Earlier in the season, Heiderscheid was inducted into the Illinois High School Soccer Coaches Association Hall of Fame, a testament to his impact on the sport and the community.
He began his coaching journey as an assistant at Civic Memorial High School before rising to prominence at Edwardsville, where his cerebral and demanding style shaped generations of athletes.
Beyond the wins, Heiderscheid’s legacy is defined by his dedication to player development and his unwavering commitment to the game, qualities that continue to influence the program he built.
