Mark Mitchell, once committed to the University of Kentucky, announced in early August that he would re‑enroll at his original program, the University of Missouri, to pursue a fifth year of eligibility. The decision follows a preliminary injunction granted on August 21 that clears a legal hurdle for the former Tigers star.
A Legal Pathway Opens
The injunction allows Mitchell to bypass the SEC's transfer rule that typically penalizes athletes who declare for the draft without formally withdrawing. While the SEC has imposed sanctions on member schools for intraconference transfers, including coach suspensions and budget fines, Missouri is not subject to the same restriction because Mitchell is not classified as a transfer under NCAA settlement language.
SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey has been vocal about the penalties, warning that schools that benefit from the exemption could face further scrutiny. Nevertheless, the ruling creates a unique opportunity for Missouri to bolster its roster ahead of the upcoming season.
Missouri's coaching staff has already secured five-star recruits Jason Crowe Jr., Toni Bryant and Aidan Chronister, and added transfers Bryson Tiller, Kennard Davis Jr. and Jamier Jones. The team also retains a roster spot that opened due to an NCAA‑approved exemption for designated student‑athletes, giving Mitchell a clear path to immediate playing time.
On the court, Mitchell has been a prolific scorer. In his most recent season he led Missouri with 18.3 points and 5.2 rebounds per game while shooting 55% from the field. The prior year he posted 13.9 points and 4.7 rebounds per game, and he even received a brief taste of the NBA, appearing in four Summer League games for the Denver Nuggets before averaging 4.8 points and 1.8 rebounds.
