Mark Smith Joins Rockford University Men’s Basketball Staff

Former Illinois Pro Academy Director Brings Pro‑Level Development Experience

Rockford University announced this week that Mark Smith will serve as an assistant coach for its men’s basketball program beginning with the 2026‑27 campaign. The hiring underscores the school’s intent to bolster its coaching roster with a practitioner who has navigated both collegiate and elite amateur circuits.

A Career Shaped by Player Development

At North Park, Smith coached and recruited six all‑conference players, while also assisting with scouting reports, game planning, and player development. He coordinated position‑specific training and conditioning for more than twenty student‑athletes, contributing to measurable performance gains across the roster.

His next stop came at Trinity International University, where he spent the 2021‑22 season as a graduate assistant and JV head coach. In that role he helped develop two additional all‑conference athletes and led the JV squad to the best single‑season record in school history, overseeing strength and conditioning sessions, post‑player development plans, scheduling, travel logistics, and facility management.

Smith also served as Director of Regional Basketball Operations and Development for Illinois Pro Academy. There he oversaw facility operations, coordinated events, managed logistics, and contributed to marketing and advertising initiatives, while also coaching 17U teams on the Adidas 3SSB and 3 Stripe Gold circuits.

Academic Excellence and AAU Leadership

Beyond institutional roles, Smith has been a head coach for the Bulldogs 13U AAU team and has guided 17U squads on the Adidas 3SSB and 3 Stripe Gold circuits. His academic credentials include a Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership/Sport Management earned summa cum laude from Waldorf University in 2025, where he graduated with a 3.91 GPA. He completed his undergraduate studies in Biology/Pre‑Medical at Trinity International University in 2022, having been a three‑time all‑conference academic student‑athlete and a member of the 2017 Elite Eight team that set a school win record.

Looking Ahead

With his blend of on‑court coaching, operational oversight, and academic distinction, Smith is positioned to contribute immediately to the team's strategic planning and player growth. The university community anticipates that his experience will translate into stronger competitive performance and enhanced recruitment pipelines for the upcoming season.
