Mark Thompson’s 700th Victory Marks a Historic Milestone
Mark Thompson, the longtime head coach of the Elder Panthers baseball program, celebrated a career‑defining achievement on May 12 when he recorded his 700th victory, positioning him among an exclusive group of coaches in Ohio High School Athletic Association history.
Thompson’s journey in Ohio baseball spans more than three decades, having helmed the Panthers since 1990 and guiding the team to state championships in 1999 and 2005, moments that cemented the program’s reputation as a powerhouse and earned him induction into the Ohio High School Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2013.
Before his tenure at Elder, Thompson honed his craft as a pitching coach at Western Hills, where he contributed to a state title in 1986, illustrating a coaching path that blends playing experience with strategic mastery.
A Legacy Among Ohio’s Baseball Greats
The milestone also places Thompson in the company of legendary figures such as Don Thorp, who tops the all‑time win list with 1,011 victories, and fellow coaches Ken Gray and Mike Cameron, who have also amassed impressive win totals, underscoring a competitive era for Ohio baseball. The Elder Panthers stand as the program with the most wins in OHSAA history, reflecting the sustained excellence fostered by Thompson and his staff.
Beyond the statistics, Thompson’s influence extends to the community, shaping young athletes and preserving a tradition of competitive baseball that continues to inspire future generations across the state.
