Smyrna’s football program is poised for a pivotal change as the Bulldogs prepare for the 2026 season under new leadership. The team, which has become synonymous with a physical, disciplined, and tough‑nosed style of play, will look to preserve its identity while moving forward with a familiar face at the helm.
A Familiar Transition
Mark Williams, who previously served as head coach at Gallatin High School from 2012 to 2018, returns to the sidelines after a stint as an assistant under his brother Matt Williams. Matt, now an assistant principal at Rockvale High School, will shift his focus to administration, leaving Mark to inherit a program that has reached the playoffs for 13 consecutive years.
The Bulldogs’ culture, built on relentless effort and a disciplined approach, will remain unchanged. Mark Williams has emphasized that the team’s recipe for success — physicality, discipline, and toughness — will continue to guide daily practices and game planning.
Defensive Leaders Set to Anchor the Squad
A senior-laden defense returns to lead the charge. Linebackers Noah Jaeger and Daylyn Sanders, along with defensive lineman Anthony Staples, form the core of a unit that combined for 151 tackles, five sacks, two forced fumbles, and an interception in the previous season. Their performances helped the Bulldogs hold six opponents to 14 points or fewer, including two shutouts.
Jaeger posted a team‑high 64 tackles while adding two sacks and two forced fumbles. Sanders contributed 52 tackles and a sack, and Staples recorded 35 tackles, two sacks, and an interception. Together, the trio provides a blend of experience and playmaking ability that should keep opponents guessing.
Opening Battle Against Brentwood
The Bulldogs will open the 2026 season at home on August 21 against Brentwood. The matchup marks the first test of the new coaching era and offers a early gauge of how quickly the revamped staff can embed its philosophy into game situations.
With a storied tradition of playoff appearances and a defense poised to anchor the team, Smyrna enters the season with cautious optimism. Mark Williams’ familiarity with the program, combined with the returning senior leadership, suggests that the Bulldogs will once again be a formidable presence on the field.
