Markus Burton, a standout guard who spent three seasons at Notre Dame, has announced his transfer to Indiana University, bringing his relentless work ethic to the Hoosiers' program.
A Fresh Start in the Big Ten
During his tenure at Notre Dame, Burton earned Indiana Mr. Basketball honors in 2023 and made history as the first player in Fighting Irish history to receive ACC Rookie of the Year. He followed that with a sophomore season in which he topped the ACC in scoring during conference play, averaging 23.5 points per game, though an ankle injury limited him to just ten appearances.
Reflecting on his decision, Burton cited the need to challenge himself and fully realize his potential. He praised the guidance he received from his former coaches, including Micah Shrewsberry, for shaping him into a leader and keeping him level‑headed through the ups and downs of college basketball.
The turning point came when Drake University’s then‑head coach Darian DeVries, who had offered Burton his first Division 1 scholarship, rekindled the conversation. DeVries’ genuine interest and clear vision for the Hoosiers' future convinced Burton that Indiana was the right place to continue his growth.
Now wearing the crimson and white, Burton describes himself as a “hard‑nosed dog” who wants to win for Indiana. He is eager to help the Hoosiers return to the NCAA Tournament and to test himself against the nation’s top competition.
