Maroa-Forsyth High School opened its turf at Walter Boyd Field on Saturday for a 7‑on‑7 football showcase that brought together eight area programs.
The event featured teams from Clinton, Clifton Central, Greenville, Eureka, Pontiac, Peoria Notre Dame and Civic Memorial, each rotating through a series of drills designed to simulate game‑like situations.
Seeing the Playbook in Action
Coaches used the tournament as a live laboratory, testing offensive formations and defensive alignments while giving players the chance to execute routes and coverages against unfamiliar opponents.
A unique scoring twist rewarded more than just touchdowns: a six‑point score followed by a two‑point conversion counted as one play, while defensive turnovers earned three points, encouraging aggressive play on both sides of the ball.
Clifton Central emerged as the champion of the day, edging out the competition with a balanced attack that capitalized on the new point structure.
Maroa-Forsyth senior quarterback Aiden Williams highlighted the value of the experience, noting that “the biggest thing is we’re getting reps in game‑like situations and learning how to work together as a unit.”
Lucas Baker, a senior tight end from Clinton, echoed the sentiment, saying the tournament helped him adapt to different offensive schemes and pick up new skills that will benefit his team moving forward.
Beyond the scoreboard, the day offered a rare glimpse into the strategic preparations of each program, giving coaches and players alike a clearer picture of strengths and areas for improvement before the upcoming season.
