Marquette University’s men’s soccer team stepped onto the freshly marked pitch at Valley Fields on August 21, marking the start of the 2026 season. The match ended in a 2‑2 draw, continuing the pattern of a season‑opening stalemate from the previous year.
The opening goal arrived in the 12th minute when Mateo Stoka intercepted a loose ball, turned with his left foot and curled a shot that slipped past the Oakland keeper. His strike gave the Golden Eagles an early lead and settled nerves in the camp.
Oakland answered quickly, with Grant Mateer striking from the edge of the box in the 36th minute after a swift counter‑attack. The equaliser shifted momentum and forced Marquette to regroup before the break.

The second half saw Tomiwa Adewumi find the net in the 72nd minute, his first senior goal for Marquette. Adewumi, who logged a team‑high three attempts, celebrated with a modest fist pump before the ball was reset for a corner.
