Marreese Speights has officially taken over as the head coach of Polk State College men's basketball, effective June 1. The college announced the hiring after a thorough search that highlighted his extensive playing background and emerging coaching credentials.
Speights enjoyed a ten‑year NBA career in which he suited up for the Philadelphia 76ers, Memphis Grizzlies, and Golden State Warriors. Drafted 16th overall by Philadelphia in 2008, he later contributed to the Warriors' 2015 championship run and was part of a historic 73‑win regular season the following year.
At the University of Florida, Speights helped the Gators capture a national title and distinguished himself as a versatile big man, averaging 14.5 points per game while leading the team in rebounds, blocks, and shooting efficiency as a sophomore.
His coaching journey began at Georgia Southern University, where he served as a graduate assistant, and later as Director of Player Development at the University of South Florida. Most recently, he founded Speights Academy in St. Petersburg and guided the Amateur Athletic Union program Team Speights, while also steering Northside Christian School to the 2A state semifinals.
A Coaching Philosophy Rooted in Grit
Speights says he wants his new program to embody grit and toughness, drawing on the lessons learned from both his playing and coaching experiences. He emphasizes character development as much as skill development, promising a culture that reflects the hard‑working ethos of Polk County.
Beyond basketball, Speights holds a bachelor’s degree in mass communications from Union Institute in Ohio, underscoring his commitment to education and communication as tools for leadership.
