Opening Victory Extends Streak
Marshall's men's soccer squad opened the 2026 campaign in impressive fashion, defeating Fairfield 2-1 in a home match that saw the Herd extend their winning streak in season openers to five consecutive victories. The team, ranked 17th in the preseason poll, controlled the tempo from the outset.
The deadlock was broken in the 75th minute when Goncalo Machado slipped a shot past the Fairfield keeper, giving Marshall a 1-0 lead. Ten minutes later, a miscommunication on a clearance saw the ball drop to Cristiano Carlos, whose strike levelled the score. With seconds ticking down, Ryan Holmes delivered a precise pass to Nikita Pahkomov, whose deflection fell to Adam N'Goran, who struck the winner in the dying moments.
Marshall dominated possession throughout, outshot Fairfield 17-2 and created numerous chances, including four near‑misses from Thiago Apolinario, Gabriel Stevanato, Haruhi Taneda and Pahkomov themselves. The defensive pressure forced errors and limited Fairfield to just two attempts on goal.
The Herd now turn their attention to a Thursday showdown with UC Santa Barbara, a match that will test their early‑season form against a different style of play and could further cement their early dominance.
