Marshall University has announced that the indoor turf field inside the Chris Cline Indoor Athletic Complex will be named Alex Lawrence Field, a tribute to the late baseball alumnus who starred for the program from 1955 to 1959 and earned All‑Mid‑American Conference honors.
The dedication follows a generous contribution from his widow, Kim Lawrence, to the Big Green Scholarship Foundation, which will fund the new surface. Kim Lawrence, who previously supported Marshall Athletics with a seven‑figure gift that led to the naming of the Alex Lawrence Clubhouse at the baseball stadium, continues to channel her resources into honoring her husband’s legacy despite ongoing health battles.
Alex Lawrence’s connection to Marshall extended beyond the diamond; he was active in Student Government, fraternities, and ROTC, and later built a career in industrial development in West Virginia before becoming a Taco Bell franchisee.
The newly christened field is designed to serve more than 400 student‑athletes across all varsity teams, providing a versatile training venue that can be used year‑round and serve as a hub for a variety of campus events.
A Legacy of Giving
Kim Lawrence’s philanthropy reflects a deep commitment to the university community. Her earlier investment in the baseball stadium not only funded the Alex Lawrence Clubhouse but also set a precedent for private support that enhances athletic facilities for current and future generations.
Facilities for the Future
The Alex Lawrence Field will host competitions, clinics, and community outreach programs, reinforcing Marshall’s “Taking Care of Our House” initiative to ensure student‑athletes compete in first‑class environments.
Remembering Alex Lawrence
Beyond his athletic achievements, Alex Lawrence was remembered for his leadership on campus and his dedication to service, traits that continue to inspire the Mountaineer spirit.
University officials say the naming ceremony underscores the power of private generosity in advancing public education and athletics, and they anticipate the field will become a cornerstone of campus life for years to come.
