Marshall University’s women’s soccer squad opened its 2026 campaign with a road test in North Carolina, traveling to High Point for a Thursday evening matchup at Vert Stadium. The Herd, now 1‑0, faced a High Point team sitting at 0‑2, with kickoff scheduled for 4 p.m.
Coach Rafa Simoes Returns to the Helm
Head coach Rafa Simoes, a 2018 alumnus of the University of Charleston where he played under Chris Grassie, is in his third season guiding the program. Under his leadership the team posted its most wins in a decade last year, earning four All‑Conference honors and establishing a foundation for continued growth.
Lombardi’s Breakout Debut
Junior forward Delfina Lombardi stole the spotlight by scoring all three goals in the season‑opening win. She also contributed two assists, linking up with sophomore midfielder Luana Gusmao, who helped create the attacking rhythm that overwhelmed the opposition.
Between the lines, junior goalkeeper Emma Durand delivered a clutch moment, saving a penalty kick that marked Marshall’s first successful conversion from the spot since October 2021.
A Global Roster
The 2026 roster features players from 16 different countries, the most diverse squad in program history, highlighting the team’s expanding international footprint.
High Point’s New Chapter
High Point, under head coach Aaron McGuiness, has introduced ten new players to its lineup and has dropped two narrow 1‑0 defeats at home to UNC Greensboro and Davidson earlier this season. Despite the early setbacks, the Panthers remain the reigning Big South Conference Tournament champions.
The upcoming contest will be Marshall’s first visit to High Point since 2018, a series that currently stands at 3‑2 in favor of the Herd. As both teams look to build momentum, the match promises to be a pivotal early test for the season’s ambitions.
