Marshalltown Baseball Suffers Doubleheader Defeat to Mason City
The Marshalltown baseball squad entered a two‑game series against Mason City with hopes of extending a 24‑game winning streak, only to see it snapped in decisive fashion. The Riverhawks fell 20‑1 in the opener and 16‑1 in the nightcap, leaving the team with just two runs scored across 36 innings of play.
Mason City’s offense exploded for 36 runs, while Marshalltown managed a solitary pair of scores. The Riverhawks did manage to claim the first and last runs of the night, but the bulk of the action belonged to the visitors, who piled on nine runs in the opening frame of the second game and never looked back.
Key contributors for Mason City included Gabe Ries, who launched a two‑run homer, and Bennett Miller, who added a pair of three‑run blasts. Pitcher Eli Schultz limited Marshalltown to a single hit over four innings, striking out seven batters and allowing only one other hit.
Marshalltown’s defense struggled, committing three errors in the first game and seven in the second, which helped Mason City extend its lead. Coach Colton Hanke acknowledged the team’s mistakes and said the club must tighten up before its next matchups.
Schedule Looms as Riverhawks Seek Redemption
The Bobcats are slated to face Ottumwa on Friday night before traveling to Des Moines North on Monday, giving the team a quick turnaround to regroup and address the defensive lapses that proved costly against Mason City.
Despite the loss, several players showed flashes of promise. Jalen Logsdon collected both of Marshalltown’s hits in the second game and finished the night with three of four at‑bats, while Eli Schultz went 2‑for‑3 with a double and four RBIs.
The upcoming schedule will test whether the Riverhawks can translate individual performances into team success, as they look to bounce back from a humbling doubleheader.
