Martinsville High School has named Tommy Golding as its new head varsity football coach for the 2026 season, a move that keeps a familiar face at the program’s helm.
A familiar face takes the helm
Golding brings three decades of coaching experience and 34 years of service in public education to the role, having previously served as head baseball coach, defensive coordinator, assistant principal and interim principal.
He will continue to serve as the school’s athletic director, a dual responsibility that district leaders say provides seamless transition and stability for both athletes and staff.
Golding replaces Joe Fielder, who left the program earlier this year, and will draw on his deep knowledge of the school’s culture and expectations.
Superintendent Dr. Zebedee Talley Jr. emphasized that promoting an internal candidate reflects a desire for continuity, ensuring that players and coaches benefit from consistent leadership.
Central to Golding’s coaching philosophy is a run‑first offense, a physical approach he believes has historically yielded success for Martinsville and positions athletes to thrive.
Community members and parents have voiced confidence that Golding’s experience and commitment will preserve the program’s tradition while guiding it forward.
