The University of Maryland’s field hockey squad began its 2026 campaign in spectacular fashion, routing Drexel 3-0 and clinching the program’s 30th consecutive opener victory dating back to 1997.
Early in the first quarter, rookie Aida Ierubino struck for her first career goal, and shortly after, Babs van Hest added her own debut marker in the 12th minute. Both scores were set up by senior playmaker Maci Bradford, whose precise passing helped the Terps build a quick two‑goal lead.
Early Dominance
The second half saw Madeline Vasilios extend the advantage with a well‑placed strike, while goalkeeper Ryleigh Osborne preserved the clean sheet, delivering a shutout that underscored the team’s defensive cohesion.
Maryland outshot Drexel 27‑5, holding the Dragons scoreless in the final quarter, and the 28th shutout in a season opener in program history was recorded. The win also pushed the Terps to an 11‑0 all‑time record against Drexel, a streak that has been guided by head coach Missy Meharg.
Looking ahead, the Terps are set to face Temple on Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Conference Cup, a match that will test their defensive discipline and depth as they continue to integrate new talent such as Francisca Eschoyez, Ella Beach and Erin Callahan, who made her first career start in her second season.
