The University of Maryland men's soccer program is entering the 2026 season with a sense of urgency and optimism. Building on a 2025 campaign that delivered a 13‑2‑4 record, an undefeated regular slate and a Big Ten championship, the Terps have already tasted the NCAA quarterfinal round. Head coach Sasho Cirovski, who has guided the team for 34 years, stresses that the current squad represents the most talented and deepest group he has seen in over a decade.
At the heart of the side are senior leaders who blend experience with hunger. Captain Laurin Mack, a goalkeeper who posted nine shutouts last year, will anchor a defense that also features returning stalwarts such as Lilian Fichelle and Dominic Ayella. Midfielders Leon Koehl and Albi Ndrenika, alongside newcomers Rodrigo Neri, Franklin Affanyi and Said El Eyssami, provide a dynamic engine that the coaching staff believes can dominate possession and create chances. The midfield’s cohesion, according to Koehl, is driven by a shared desire to learn and improve.
The Terps will test their mettle early with non‑conference fixtures against ranked opponents High Point and Georgetown before diving into a grueling Big Ten schedule. Ten of their matches will be played at Ludwig Field in College Park, where a passionate fan base known as the Crew will provide a vibrant backdrop. The atmosphere at Ludwig Field is expected to be a decisive factor as the team looks to translate home support into on‑field performance.
Cirovski’s vision centers on the team’s ability to rise to the challenge when it matters most. By targeting both Big Ten and national titles, the program aims to extend its recent success beyond the quarterfinal barrier. With a blend of seasoned veterans, impactful transfers and a youthful core, Maryland believes it has the depth and determination to contend for championships and to sustain its upward trajectory.
