Maryland’s football program has added another piece to its growing Texas pipeline, as interior lineman Abdus Kone announced his commitment to the Terps on Wednesday.
A Texas pipeline fuels Maryland’s rise
The commitment underscores the strategic reach of Maryland’s recruiting staff, particularly inside linebackers coach Zac Spavital, a Texas native who has cultivated relationships that keep top talent flowing across the border.
Kone, a 6‑foot‑6, 312‑pound interior offensive lineman from North Shore High School in Texas, chose Maryland over finalists UTSA and North Texas, citing the program’s trajectory and the chance to be part of a class that already ranks No. 52 nationally among eight commitments.
What the commitment means for the Terps
The addition of Kone brings the Terps’ 2026 recruiting class to eight signees, a group that includes DeMatha Catholic running back Terrance Grant, offensive lineman Caleb Canty, quarterback William Jackson, safety Kevin Jackson, and fellow Texan Day’Jon Moore. With a strong foundation on the line, Maryland hopes a successful on‑field showing this fall will attract further talent before the cycle closes.
Coach Mike Locksley and his staff view the Texas influx as a cornerstone for rebuilding a defense that has shown flashes of dominance in recent scrimmages. The coaching staff believes that continued success on the field will not only please fans but also cement Maryland’s reputation as a destination for elite prospects seeking a blend of academic opportunity and competitive play.
