A Turning Point in the Season
The Maryland women’s soccer squad opened its season with a gritty 2‑2 draw against Virginia Tech, a team expected to finish near the top of the ACC.
Virginia Tech came out firing, launching 25 attempts and forcing early chances, including a corner that saw Peyton May head home to put the Hokies ahead.
Maryland’s attack began to find rhythm when Abigail Stager threaded a pass to Jolie Farmer, whose 65th‑minute strike leveled the score and sparked a surge.
The momentum shifted again when Ella Petry struck in the 71st minute, restoring the lead for Virginia Tech before Maryland’s defense steadied.
With the game hanging in the balance, goalkeeper Meredith Fisher was replaced by Faith Luckey, who immediately began a sequence of saves that kept the Terrapins in contention.
Luckey’s composure shone during a flurry of second‑half chances, culminating in a last‑gasp fingertip stop on Eliana Salama’s free‑kick in the dying seconds.
Coach Michael Marchiano’s tactical adjustments paid off, as Luckey’s four saves in the half preserved the draw and highlighted the team’s resilience.
Jolie Farmer, who also contributed an assist earlier, finished the match as the offensive catalyst, while the collective effort of players such as Dani Gichner, Riley Karpinski and Anna Weir underscored the competitive spirit.
