A Family Connection Fuels the Decision
Mason Edwards, a senior at Byron High School, has signed his commitment to play Division II football for Northern Michigan University. The announcement came after a season in which he earned Post Bulletin All‑Area First Team and Skyway Brass All‑District honors, and after competing at the Adidas Nationals wrestling tournament.
Edwards grew up spending considerable time in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, where his grandparents reside. His mother, a Northern Michigan graduate, has been a constant mentor throughout his athletic journey, encouraging him to pursue both football and wrestling at the collegiate level.
The proximity to his family was a decisive factor. ‘Knowing that my grandparents can watch my games without a long trip makes this feel like the right place,’ Edwards said. He also cited the university’s strong athletic program and academic reputation as key draws.
Balancing Sports and Academics
Beyond the gridiron, Edwards balances his football commitments with a rigorous wrestling schedule. His coach, Ryan Radke, has praised his work ethic, noting that the athlete’s discipline on the mat translates directly to his performance on the field.
Edwards plans to major in a field that aligns with his interests in health and community service, a path he hopes to continue at NMU. He believes the new offensive line teammates will elevate the team’s performance, setting the stage for a competitive season.
