Mason Heintschel, a sophomore quarterback for the Oregon Ducks, has been named to the 2026 Allstate Wuerffel Trophy Watch List, a preseason recognition that highlights college football players who combine on‑field performance with meaningful community service.
A season defined by service
The watch list, announced this week, includes a dozen candidates who will later be trimmed to eleven semifinalists, with the final ten recipients honored for their dedication to service, leadership and athletic excellence.
Heintschel’s selection comes as he prepares for a second season that already features a standout statistical line: 201 completions on 316 attempts for 2,354 yards and 16 touchdowns in 2025, earning two ACC Rookie of the Week awards and a weekly quarterback honor.
On the field he guided the Panthers to a 6‑3 record in nine starts, highlighted by a 400‑yard, three‑touchdown outing against NC State and four performances of at least 300 passing yards.
Off the gridiron, Heintschel has launched the ‘Have a Heart’ campaign, a partnership with UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh that raises awareness and funds for pediatric cardiac care. The initiative honors his childhood friend Lukas, whose heart donation saved another child’s life, and extends mentorship to Sloan, a young transplant recipient who is thriving after surgery.
'Have a Heart' is more than a charitable drive; it reflects Heintschel’s belief that athletes can amplify health advocacy, using their platform to support a cause that resonates with his personal story.
The Allstate Wuerffel Trophy, established in 2005 and named after former Florida quarterback Danny Wuerffel, celebrates players who serve others and inspire community engagement. Each year, the award’s selection process also designates members of the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, recognizing athletes who demonstrate a commitment to service beyond the stadium.
Eleven players from the watch list will eventually be selected for that team, underscoring the award’s dual focus on athletic promise and societal impact.
