A New Chapter for Mason West
Mason West, the 29th overall selection in the 2025 NHL Draft, has shifted his focus from the football field to the ice, joining the Chicago Blackhawks organization with a clear vision for his next chapter.
The Blackhawks highlighted his athletic pedigree and potential, noting that his background in high‑school sports could translate into a unique edge on the rink.
West capped his high school career at Edina High School in Minnesota with a state championship in the 6A division, a testament to his leadership and competitive drive.
After the championship, he moved to the USHL’s Fargo Force, where he posted 10 goals and 25 points in 38 games, demonstrating his ability to adapt to a higher level of play.
His performance caught the attention of the WHL, leading to a trade of his rights from the Vancouver Giants to the Portland Winterhawks, a move that underscored his rising prospect status.
Committed to Michigan State University, West will enter a program crowded with fellow first‑round NHL draft picks, including Sam Rinzel, Marek Vanacker, Chase Reid, Nikita Klepov, Ethan Belchetz, Jack Hextall, Tommy Bleyl, Cayden Lindstrom, Ryker Lee, Joshua Ravensbergen and Cullen Potter.
The university environment offers intense competition, but West says he is eager to absorb knowledge, sharpen his core strength and skating, and contribute to the team’s success on the ice.
He acknowledges the depth of talent around him, yet remains focused on daily improvement, knowing that each practice and game will be a stepping stone toward his NHL aspirations.
