Massport to Unveil 45‑Foot Soccer Ball in Boston Harbor Ahead of 2026 World Cup

The massive blue sphere, billed as the world’s largest, will anchor a week‑long celebration at Piers Park II.

A Record‑Breaking Spectacle

Massport is set to unveil a 45‑foot soccer ball near Boston Harbor in June, a structure that officials say will claim the Guinness World Record for the largest soccer ball ever displayed.

The ball, weighing roughly 2,200 pounds and constructed from material similar to a standard soccer ball, was built in Ohio before being shipped to Piers Park II in East Boston. Its bright blue exterior will be visible from across the harbor, turning the waterfront into a temporary landmark.

The project carries a $300,000 price tag, with costs split evenly between Massport and corporate sponsors, including engineering consultant HNTB. The celebration will run from June 12 through June 18, culminating in a community event on June 13 that features family‑friendly activities and entertainment from noon to 4 p.m.

Linking Soccer and the 2026 World Cup

The display coincides with the buildup to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a tournament that will bring global attention to the sport. On June 13, Haiti will face Scotland at Gillette Stadium, a match FIFA has dubbed "Boston Stadium," further tying the local celebration to the international tournament.

Massport CEO Rich Davey emphasized that the installation offers residents a chance to enjoy the neighborhood’s vibrant waterfront and skyline views while engaging with a piece of soccer history.

The endeavor also revives memories of the previous record, a 38‑foot, 11.8‑inch ball that was set in Doha, Qatar, in February 2013. By surpassing that size, the Boston installation aims to cement the city’s place in soccer lore ahead of the world’s premier tournament.
