The massive sphere, built from PVC‑coated polyester fabric stretched over a polyurethane leather shell, will weigh roughly 2,200 pounds and measure more than 19 times the diameter of a standard FIFA‑approved ball.

The installation is slated for Piers Park II in East Boston, where it will be on display from June 12 through June 18. The timing coincides with a community celebration on June 13, featuring family‑friendly activities and a showcase match between Haiti and Scotland at Gillette Stadium later that day.
Rich Davey, a senior communications officer at Massport, emphasized that the project “captures the spirit of global sport right here in Boston,” while Samantha Decker, who is overseeing the celebration, noted that “the week‑long program is designed to welcome families of all ages.”
A Match of Nations
The Haiti‑Scotland encounter at Gillette Stadium will serve as a warm‑up fixture for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, bringing a taste of international competition to the Boston area. Organizers say the game will highlight the region’s growing soccer culture and provide a festive backdrop for the ball’s debut.
Funding for the project is split evenly between Massport and a consortium of corporate sponsors, with engineering firm HNTB contributing both design expertise and financial support. The $300,000 budget underscores a public‑private partnership aimed at blending infrastructure, sport and community engagement.
While the giant ball will eventually be dismantled, its brief presence at the waterfront is intended to spark enthusiasm for the upcoming World Cup and to demonstrate how large‑scale public art can activate urban spaces.
